“This song was first brought to my attention one night at Clifftop by our friend Adam Smith during a conversation about murder ballads. This fascinating piece of NC folklore peaked my interest because I had never heard the ballad before but also because Silver was the first woman put to death in North Carolina (1833). Silver brutally murdered her husband at the ripe old age of 18 (or 19 - there are conflicting reports) for reasons unknown, although abuse was suspected by neighbors. Some say the lyrics in this song are her own words originally from a poem she wrote but most agree she did not write it herself. The song is interesting on its own but we felt it needed something so we added the twin fiddles to give it an extra punch.” --CV
